The Best Skin-Care Routine for Your 50s-Platinum Deluxe

Whether you're in your late 30s, early 40s, or somewhere in between, it's a good idea to start thinking about your skin-care routine as you approach the big 5-0.

I know, I know: You're not supposed to think about getting older, but this isn't just about vanity; it's also about preventing wrinkles and other signs of damage due to sun exposure. So let me help you get started on the right foot with these five steps:

Step 1: Cleanse your skin.

Step 1: Cleanse your skin.

  • For dry skin, use a gentle cleanser and moisturizer.

  • For oily skin, use a mild facial cleanser and toner. If you have very oily skin, exfoliate twice per week (once with an exfoliating pad or cloth) to remove dead cells that can cause acne breakouts. Use moisturizer in the morning and evening after cleansing but avoid using it immediately before applying sunscreen—the sunscreen will leave a white film on your face which will make it more difficult for the moisturizer to absorb properly into your pores.

If you have dry skin, use a creamy or thicker moisturizer. Use lightweight facial moisturizers for oily skin, but avoid alcohol-based ones. If you have very oily skin, try using oil-free products that are labeled “noncomedogenic” (meaning they won’t clog pores).

Step 2: Use a serum or two

Serums are the most potent type of skin care product you can use. They are more powerful than moisturizers and provide many more benefits. Some serums contain antioxidants, which help protect your skin from free radicals and slow down the aging process by limiting the damage they cause. Others contain retinol or vitamin C, which have been proven to reduce fine lines and wrinkles by boosting collagen production as well as increasing elastin production in your skin cells.

In addition to being concentrated forms of moisturizer that provide a wide range of benefits for your skin, serums also have one major advantage over lotions: You can apply them either day or night! As long as you're using a product with ingredients that make sense for your skin type (i.e., one that doesn't irritate or dry it out), any serum can be used during both daytime activities (like going outside) and nighttime activities (like sleeping).

When applying a serum at night, first wash your face with warm water then pat dry with a clean towel before applying an oil-free moisturizer like Platinum Deluxe 24K Gold Oil. Then take about two drops of Platinum Deluxe 24K Gold Serum onto the pad of each finger—if it's too much liquid on there then wipe some off with another clean towel—and gently massage into clean skin until absorbed by all parts equally around face neck chest décolletage shoulders arms hands feet ankles toes tops backs backs backs backs backs backs backs necks fronts fronts sides closures sides fronts tops tops backs top fronts back fronts sides backs front backs backs debases bottom lords foreheads nose tips cheeks forehead eyebrows

Step 3: Moisturize.

  • Moisturize.

This is the last step in your skin-care routine and it shouldn’t be rushed. As with all things, less is more when it comes to moisturizing: use just enough to cover your face and neck, being careful not to overdo it or else you may end up with greasy looking skin. If you have oily or acne-prone skin (or live in a humid climate), choose a lightweight lotion with salicylic acid to help control shine; for dry or mature skin types, look for products that contain hyaluronic acid, which holds moisture onto the surface of your face so that it doesn’t evaporate as quickly as other ingredients might.

Do not apply moisturizer during the day or at night—all those extra layers will trap dirt and oil into your pores while also increasing the likelihood that you'll break out!

Step 4: Apply an eye cream.

You've probably been using an eye cream since you were in your 20s, but it's time to change up your routine. An eye cream that is specifically designed for the delicate skin around the eyes is a good idea—and usually comes as part of a collection of products for specific areas of concern, like Platinum Deluxe Eye Essentials Kit. Apply this product with your ring finger, which is the most gentle finger. Make sure to use circular motions on both upper and lower lids, avoiding any tugging or pulling on your skin.

Apply sunscreen whenever possible (in the daytime), especially if you're out in the sun more than usual due to travel or work commitments.

When it comes to sunscreen, you can't be too careful. Sunscreen needs to be SPF-rated at 30 or higher, and it should contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as an active ingredient. It's also a good idea to look for a broad-spectrum formula that protects against both UVA and UVB rays.

Step 5: Add a bonus treatment, if needed.

Now that you have your home-care routine down, it’s time to add some bonuses. If you need extra help with acne, rosacea or other skin conditions:

  • Use a face mask once a week.

  • Use a vitamin C serum every day.

  • Use retinol cream nightly for firmer skin and fewer wrinkles. You can apply it in the morning if you prefer (it won’t make you look like an oil slick).

  • Use an anti-aging serum twice daily for smoother texture and brighter skin tone; women who use this type of product are more likely to experience positive benefits than those who don't!

If you need extra help with dry skin: Use a moisturizer with SPF every morning. Follow up with a light moisturizer or cream if your skin feels dry and tight after cleansing. If you’re still experiencing flaky patches, try using an oil-free gel cleanser instead of soap in the morning to remove makeup and other residue from the day before exfoliating. This can help prevent clogged pores and dead skin cells from building up.

Your skin-care routine doesn't have to be complicated, but you do want to make sure you're taking care of your skin at this age.

Your skin-care routine can be simple and easy to follow. You don't need to spend a lot of money on products, either—just make sure you're using products that are gentle and fragrance-free, with few ingredients.

First, wash your face with soap and water before applying any skin-care products. Then, use a gentle cleanser (and no exfoliator) to cleanse your skin without drying it out or irritating it further. If you're using a toner or astringent after washing your face, make sure it's fragrance-free and non-comedogenic (won't clog pores).

Next step: moisturize! Choose an oil-, alcohol-, or silicone-based lotion depending on what type of hydration your skin needs most at this point in life. Don't forget sunscreen! The best way to protect our aging faces from sun damage is by wearing SPF 30+ daily (make sure it's broad spectrum coverage so that UVA rays are included).
