How to apply your makeup.

If you want to look beautiful and put together, makeup is the key. But applying it isn't necessarily intuitive. It can take some practice and experimentation (don't get discouraged!) to find out what works best for your skin type, hair color, eye shape and other unique characteristics. Here are seven tips from licensed esthetician Kathy Fields that will help you master the basics of applying foundation like a pro:

Use a primer.

A primer is a base for your foundation. It helps to keep the skin smooth and even, which means you won't have to spend as much time applying makeup to cover up unevenness. A good primer will also help keep makeup from settling into fine lines (like those pesky crow's feet around your eyes).

If you're using a powder foundation, choose one with an SPF rating of at least 15--that way it can protect against harmful UV rays without hindering how well it works as a base product. If you prefer liquid or cream foundations over powders, try searching for one that includes both silicone and hyaluronic acid (HA). Silicone prevents water loss while HA plumps up fine lines by attracting moisture from deeper layers within the skin's surface; these two ingredients work together to create an extra-smooth surface that makes blending easier when applying concealer or other face products later on in step 3 below!

Apply foundation.

Apply foundation to your forehead, cheeks, nose and chin. Use a sponge or brush to apply the foundation in small strokes that follow the natural shape of your face. A light hand will give you better results than heavy application; if you use too much product on one area of skin it can look cakey and unnatural.

Apply a shade that matches your skin tone exactly (or slightly lighter). If you have yellow undertones in your skin and choose a shade with pink undertones instead of yellow, it'll look strange when it oxidizes on contact with air--and even worse after an hour or two!

Set your foundation with powder.

Next, set your foundation with powder. This step is especially important if you have oily skin or live in an area with high humidity. To do this, use a large brush (like a fluffy powder brush) to apply loose or compact powder over the entire face in small sections at a time. The idea here is not to cover up all of your makeup; instead, only apply enough product so that the skin looks matte and smooth when viewed from afar.

If you're trying out some new products for the first time and aren't sure how much coverage they'll give you, try applying them without any foundation underneath first--then use this step as an opportunity to see what kind of finish they give on their own before adding anything else underneath!

Conceal any dark spots with concealer.

Once you have finished applying your foundation, it's time to conceal any dark spots or imperfections. Concealers come in a variety of shades, but the most common are one shade lighter than your skin tone (or two if you want to cover up more).

Apply the concealer with either a brush or finger by tapping gently onto problem areas and blending out with light strokes until blended into your foundation. Be careful not to apply too much product! Concealers should be used as a base for other makeup products; they should never be blended into because they will look cakey if you do this incorrectly.

Apply blush to your cheeks.

Use a brush to apply bronzer, as it's easier to control than using a sponge or fingers (which can make it look streaky).

For best results, apply blush after applying bronzer so that you don't dilute its color by brushing them together on top of one another before blending them together with some translucent powder or setting spray

Use a highlighter on the tops of cheekbones and along the bridge of your nose.

Highlighter is a shimmering powder that adds brightness to the face. It can be applied all over, but it's best used on top of foundation and concealer to accentuate areas like the tops of cheekbones and along the bridge of your nose. You can also use highlighter on other parts of your face (like under eyes), but it's best not to put too much near those areas because you want them to look natural when you're done applying makeup.

If there's one thing people struggle with when applying their makeup, it's finding products that work well with their skin tone--and finding something that looks good without being too obvious or unnatural can be even more difficult! If there are red areas on your face like blemishes or rosacea flare-ups, use green-tinted concealer instead--it will counteract redness!
