Hair loss usually occurs between two and three weeks after receiving the first cycle of chemotherapy. In the previous days, you may notice a loss of shine, brittleness and it may break when combing it. From the second cycle, there is a more severe fall.
Not in all cases, there is total hair loss. It can be partial (more or less conspicuous) or not produced, but the hair does weaken considerably. It is recommendable not to add more aggressive agents in this process.
In any case, it is very important to feel good about yourself. Finding a way to feel comfortable in this period of change, often drastic, is also essential to move forward.

Shampoo for cancer patients How to act?
If there has not been a total loss, it is advisable to strengthen the hair that remains with suitable products:
- Wash the hair with a shampoo for cancer patients, as mild as possible, without detergents or thickeners, without rubbing, and with warm water, avoiding hot water.
- Carry out a comfortable and suitable haircut.
- Moisturize hair and scalp.
- Please keep it in the air for as long as possible, avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun and inclement weather (such as cold).
If there has been a total loss, hydrate and protect the skin of the scalp with maximum protection.
If you use hair prostheses (or wigs), allow at least six to eight hours a day to "breathe" the scalp, allowing it to perspire completely. If possible, use breathable prostheses all the time.
Hair prosthesis care
Depending on the type of prosthesis you use, the care is variable. In any case, we recommend that you follow the specialist's instructions where you purchased the prosthesis. Try to leave the prosthesis on a head made of porex or another material designed for this purpose whenever you remove the prosthesis.
Once attached to the support with pins, comb it carefully, avoiding pulling, and fan the hair by moving from right to left and up and down. Whether the prosthesis can be washed at home, as is the case with synthetic ones, you should do it as follows:
- Prepare a large container with warm water and the recommended shampoo (as less aggressive as possible) diluted in the water.
- Immerse the prosthesis without rubbing. Make successive dives.
- Change the water several times to rinse it off.
- Once rinsed and hydrated, place it on the porex head and remove the excess water with a towel without twisting or rubbing it.
- Comb it gently and let it air dry without a blow dryer. Please do not use the dryer or place them near any heat source to dry them in synthetic wigs.
Headscarves
Several options can be considered when we lose our hair due to a treatment such as chemotherapy. Many people prefer not to use a wig, either for aesthetics or comfort. Still, it is convenient to remember that the skull's skin is not used to direct sun exposure, so that a sudden exposure could damage it excessively.
If you prefer not to wear wigs but do not want to expose your head, there is the option of scarves. There are tissues designed specifically for cancer patients, which have particular characteristics. The handkerchiefs themselves are sewn to a cotton base which is the one that will hold the scarf to the head, preventing that if there is wind or simply if the scarf moves, the scalp is visible.
To these bases, hair can be seen in the area of the bangs, sideburns, or hair on the nape to simulate hair under the handkerchief, and combine the colors of the handkerchief with those of the clothes that are going to be worn.
